Ptosis, also called ‘blepharoptosis’ or ‘sleepy eye’, is when the upper eyelid droops and covers the iris, despite the eye being fully opened. Ptosis correction surgery in Korea is a common type of procedure.
It can be caused by genetics, aging processes, neural abnormalities, or severe amyotonia. When ptosis is not corrected at an early stage, it can cause secondary issues such as forehead wrinkles, eye sagging, headaches, and severe eye fatigue.

CDU Ptosis Correction
- CDU’s ptosis correction uses surgical techniques to produce natural and defined eyelid folds, whether the eyes are large or small. Patients can also choose between double eyelids or monolids.
The risk of revision surgery at CDU is considerably lower than at any other clinic. By accurately measuring the strength of the levator muscle before surgery, CDU formulates a solid and accurate surgical plan. This process allows us to prevent over or under-correction and to figure out the cause of muscle pressure around the eyes when the eyes are opened. It also prevents unevenness caused by other factors during the surgery. Additionally, CDU designs the new eyelid fold and eye shape by anticipating how the eye shape will change after surgery.
Reasons for Ptosis Correction
- The beauty of the eyes is determined by how much of the iris is revealed. Generally, when 80 to 90 percent of the iris is revealed, the eyes look bright and charming.
- When weak eye-opening muscles cause the upper eyelids to droop, the eyes look tired and dull. By tightening the levator muscle, eye-opening strength is enhanced, and we can bring about brighter and more defined eyes.
More than one-third of the iris is concealed by the margin of the upper eyelid.
Forehead muscles are used to open the eyes.
The eyes look dull and sleepy.
Issues Caused by Ptosis
What if ptosis correction is not performed?
In cases of blepharoptosis, if double eyelid surgery is performed without ptosis correction or if ptosis is not corrected properly, it is inevitable that the eyebrows and forehead will still be used to open the eyes. This results in an unnaturally heightened eyelid fold and unnatural lines, and the eyes look dull and sleepy.

What method is recommended in my case?
1) Non-incision ptosis correction: Fast recovery without making an incision.
When the ptosis is not severe and the skin is not too thick, the levator muller muscle can be tightened through minute holes. Brighter and bigger eyes can be achieved without any scarring.
After considering the patient’s needs, minute holes are made along the double eyelid.
Stitches are made to connect the levator muscle on the upper eyelid with the intended double eyelid fold.
Brighter and natural eyes are achieved.
2) Incisional ptosis correction: Natural and secure correction
When the ptosis is severe, the skin is thick, and/or there is excess fat, a full or partial incision is made on the upper eyelid along the desired eyelid fold, and excess fat is removed. The levator muscle is stitched to make a secure fold, creating brighter and more defined eyes.
A full or partial incision is made along the desired double eyelid, and excess fat and skin are removed.
Stitches connect the bottom of the incision to the levator muscle.
Natural and defined eyes are achieved.
CDU Multi Eye Surgery
The fundamental basis of all surgery at CDU Plastic Surgery is the patients' needs.
- Double Eyelid Surgery (creates a dynamic fold: natural when the eyes are closed and defined when the eyes are open)
- Canthoplasty (creates bigger and brighter eyes through medial epicanthoplasty and lateral canthoplasty, changing the eye shape for charming and friendly eyes with upper and lowering canthoplasty
- Ptosis Correction (improves dull-looking eyes)
Q&A About Blepharoptosis Correction
Yes, it does. When the upper eyelids sag, the folds cover the eyes even when patients try to open them. This can cause eyesight deterioration. In the most severe cases, pulling up the upper eyelids with the forehead muscles causes forehead wrinkles to deepen, which can cause migraines. For this reason, blepharoptosis correction is recommended for aesthetic as well as functional purposes.
Ptosis correction doesn’t determine the size of the eyes. However, correction reveals more of the eyes, so it can make them look brighter.
Depending on the individual’s physical characteristics, a pulling sensation may be experienced. However, this is a temporary symptom, which disappears naturally over time.
When it comes to incisional ptosis correction, the condition can last slightly longer. For one to six months after surgery, there is an adjustment period during which the patient should practice opening the eyes with the levator muscles. This practice aids the deswelling process and the eye shape becomes more natural.
After ptosis correction, patients no longer use the forehead muscles to open the eyes. This causes the position of the eyebrows to become slightly lower than before. This is not because the surgeon didn’t remove enough fat, but rather because the levator muscle is enlarged by opening the eyes. This condition improves quickly over time.
Even if the ptosis is well corrected by surgery, there is a possibility of ptosis recurrence. The eye shape can also change, due to eye-opening habits, eyesight, or eye dryness. Therefore, the surgeon will check the results seven days after surgery and decide if early correction is necessary. Early correction is usually done within two weeks. This is a quick and easy procedure which can be done in 30 minutes.
